Moon Walk and Mississippi River

The story

The Moon Walk is a riverfront promenade named for former mayor Maurice “Moon” Landrieu, but the larger story is the Mississippi itself. New Orleans was founded at this bend because the river connected the Gulf with a vast inland system. Trade, forced labor, migration, engineering and repeated flood risk all meet along this edge.

Face the water instead of the skyline. Watch the current, the working ships and the height difference between the levee and nearby streets. The river may look scenic, but it is powerful infrastructure and an active navigation channel.

The promenade is outdoors, with heat, storms, high water and events affecting comfort or access. Follow current barriers and never climb onto restricted river structures. Continue downriver toward the French Market, carrying the river’s movement into the story of trade.
