The story

Café du Monde opened its French Market coffee stand in 1862 and became known for café au lait, chicory coffee and beignets covered in powdered sugar. Its appeal is partly the food and partly the open room, where servers, trays, music, river air and a changing line turn a simple order into a piece of street theater.

Watch the room before joining the queue. A famous stop is still a working business, so keep aisles open and do not block servers for photographs. Prices, hours and service arrangements can change, especially during severe weather or major events.

The beauty is not a perfect plate. It is the contrast between hot pastry, drifting sugar and the sound of the city around the tables. From here, step toward the river so the next stop explains why this market and city formed here.
