The story
Jackson Square began as the Place d’Armes in the colonial city plan and still works as the French Quarter’s public front room. The cathedral, Cabildo, Presbytère and Pontalba buildings shape its edges, while artists, musicians, residents and visitors continually change what happens inside them.
Do not reduce the square to one centered cathedral photograph. Walk its perimeter, notice the iron fence used by artists and listen for the difference between a rehearsed performance and the everyday sound of the city. Tip performers when you stop to listen or photograph them, and ask before making a close portrait.
The gated park keeps posted hours that can change with weather, maintenance and events. The surrounding public paths remain useful when the interior is closed. This is a good place to see beauty as participation rather than decoration.
