Guide's tip. Begin beneath the painted ceiling and watch the waiting room work as both architecture and transportation. The station is open daily from 4 a.m. to 1 a.m., but passenger areas and events can change access. Walk 0.12 miles to El Pueblo and Avila Adobe across Alameda Street.

The story

Los Angeles Union Station opened in 1939 and brought several competing railroads into one terminal near the city’s historic center. Its waiting room, patios, tile, woodwork and streamlined details combine Spanish Colonial Revival, Mission Revival, Art Deco and Moderne influences. It remains an active station rather than a preserved set. Amtrak, Metrolink, Metro rail, buses and airport service keep the building moving.

Pause in the waiting room and notice how warm tile and wood soften a space designed for thousands of departures. Look for the contrast between the ceremonial front rooms and the practical passenger concourse. Beauty here comes from movement, repetition and shared expectation.

The station is open daily from 4 a.m. to 1 a.m. Follow current passenger signs and do not block boarding areas. Public lockers are unavailable, and special events can affect access.
