The story

The Japanese American National Museum grew from efforts by veterans and Little Tokyo community leaders who feared that Japanese American stories and objects were being lost. Its campus connects a 1925 former Buddhist temple, a modern Pavilion, public art and the Norman Y. Mineta Democracy Plaza. The museum documents migration, community life, wartime incarceration, civil rights, art and cultural change.

As of September 20, 2026, the Pavilion is closed for renovation and will reopen January 23, 2027. Treat this as a public exterior and neighborhood stop. Compare the historic temple building with the curved modern entrance, then look outward to Little Tokyo businesses and community institutions that keep the district alive.
