The story
Hauser & Wirth opened its Downtown Los Angeles location in 2016 inside the former Globe Mills complex. The late nineteenth and early twentieth century industrial buildings were adapted as galleries, a bookstore, restaurant, courtyard and garden. Murals and older material remain visible around the site, so the campus connects contemporary exhibitions with the Arts District’s manufacturing and street-art layers.
As of September 20, 2026, the galleries are under installation and are scheduled to reopen September 30. Use the public exterior and surrounding streets unless current signs clearly admit visitors. Look at brick, loading-scale openings, planting and murals instead of treating one exhibition as the whole destination.
Normal gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with free entry. Universal Gallery can research clearly identified artists or labels after reopening, while uncertain street art should remain an attributed lead rather than a confident identification.
