A free national park in the old Cadillac Hotel, telling how the gold rush of 1897 transformed Seattle.
The story
On July 17, 1897, the steamship Portland docked in Seattle with 68 prospectors and what the papers called a ton of gold. Seattle sold itself as the gateway to the gold fields, and of the 100,000 people who headed north, 70,000 came through the city to buy their supplies. Seattle grew from 42,000 people in 1890 to 80,000 in 1900.
The National Park Service tells the story in the Cadillac Hotel, built after the fire of 1889, on two floors of exhibits with a replica stampeder's cabin. It is free, and open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

El 17 de julio de 1897, el vapor Portland atracó en Seattle con 68 buscadores de oro y lo que los periódicos llamaron una tonelada de oro. Seattle se anunció como la puerta de los yacimientos de oro, y de las 100 000 personas que partieron hacia el norte, 70 000 pasaron por la ciudad para comprar sus provisiones. Seattle pasó de 42 000 habitantes en 1890 a 80 000 en 1900.
