The story
Albert Kerry made his money in lumber and lived a block from here. In 1927 he and his wife Katharine gave this hillside to the city so that, in the words of the gift, all who stop here may enjoy the view. It is a little over an acre of grass and railing, and it is why the postcard exists.
The view survived on purpose. When towers began rising on the south slope in the 1970s, neighbors organized as United South Slope Residents, gathered 4,800 signatures for low-rise zoning and took the developers to court. They won. The council rewrote the zoning, and the ruling reached past this hill: environmental reviews in Washington must now weigh the combined impact of projects, not each one on its own.
The steel piece framing the skyline is Changing Form, fifteen feet tall, made by Doris Totten Chase in 1971 and paid for by Kerry's children. When the railing is three deep, take the stairway at the west end down to Bayview Kinnear Park. Almost the same view, almost nobody in it.
