The story
Jane's Carousel was built in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company for Idora Park in Youngstown, Ohio, with 48 carved horses and two chariots. David and Jane Walentas bought it whole at auction on 21 October 1984, which kept it from being sold off piece by piece.
Jane Walentas then spent years restoring it in her DUMBO studio. She scraped away 62 years of park paint by hand with an X Acto knife until the original 1922 colors showed through, and recorded every find so the repainting would follow it. The carvings are often attributed to John Zalar and Frank Carretta.
The Walentases commissioned a transparent pavilion by the architect Jean Nouvel so the carousel could run all year, and it opened in Brooklyn Bridge Park on 16 September 2011. Jane Walentas died in 2020. Even on a closed day you can see the horses through the walls, with the Manhattan skyline behind them.
