Two Civil War era waterfront warehouses: Empire Stores, once packed with coffee, and the Tobacco Warehouse, whose brick shell now holds a theater and garden.
The story
These two brick buildings are survivors of the working waterfront. Empire Stores is seven warehouses in a row, built between 1868 and 1885, with thick brick and schist walls that kept goods dark and cool: sugar, molasses, wool, rubber and, above all, coffee. The Arbuckle brothers, whose coffee complex stood next door, stored their Ariosa and Yuban coffee here, and the old tracks of their private railroad still cross the nearby streets.
After the Arbuckles sold it, the building stood empty for decades. Restored, it now holds shops, restaurants and offices, with public restrooms on the first floor and a public rooftop garden with harbor views.
Next door, the pre Civil War Tobacco Warehouse is now the home of the St. Ann's Warehouse theater. Part of the old shell was left open to the sky as the Max Family Garden, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates and open during park hours. Step through an arch and look up.

Estos dos edificios de ladrillo son supervivientes del puerto de trabajo. Empire Stores son siete almacenes en fila, construidos entre 1868 y 1885, con gruesos muros de ladrillo y esquisto que mantenían la mercancía a oscuras y fresca: azúcar, melaza, lana, caucho y, sobre todo, café.
