The House of Sweden is a building in Washington, D.C., which hosts the Embassy of Sweden, the Embassy of Iceland, and the Representation of the Faroe Islands to the United States. The building is located at 2900 K Street N.W. in the Georgetown neighborhood.
The story
Most embassies in Washington hide behind a wall. This one puts its ground floor on the river path and lets you walk in. Sweden built it at 2900 K Street on the Georgetown waterfront, architects Gert Wingårdh and Tomas Hansen, finished in 2006 and inaugurated that October by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. Three missions share the building: Sweden, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Wingårdh won the Kasper Salin Prize, Sweden's national architecture award, for it in 2007. The detail worth crossing the street for is in the glass. Panels of blonde maple are laminated inside the facade, so by day the building reads as stone and water, and after dark the whole wall turns amber from the inside. The exhibition floor is free and usually open on weekends when a show is running. Check the embassy calendar first, the hours have changed before.

La mayoría de las embajadas de Washington se esconden tras un muro. Esta pone su planta baja sobre el paseo del río y deja entrar a la gente. Suecia la construyó en el 2900 de K Street, en el frente fluvial de Georgetown; los arquitectos fueron Gert Wingårdh y Tomas Hansen, se terminó en 2006 y ese mismo octubre la inauguraron el rey Carlos XVI Gustavo y la reina Silvia. Tres misiones comparten el edificio: Suecia, Islandia y la Representación de las Islas Feroe. En 2007 Wingårdh ganó por esta obra el Premio Kasper Salin, el galardón nacional de arquitectura de Suecia. El detalle que justifica cruzar la calle está en el vidrio: láminas de arce claro van laminadas dentro de la fachada, así que de día el edificio se lee como piedra y agua, y al anochecer todo el muro se vuelve ámbar desde dentro.
