The story
The lawn here is a highway that never got built. In the 1960s the District condemned these ten acres for a riverside freeway, the road was cancelled, and the cleared ground was paved and run as a public parking lot. The Park Service took the land in 1984, then had no money to build anything, so the cars stayed another twenty years. The finished park opened in the fall of 2011.
Walk east of the fountain to the granite steps dropping into the water. Most people use them as somewhere to sit with lunch. They were built as grandstand seating. This stretch of the Potomac is a rowing course and the steps face the finish line, so on a spring or autumn Saturday you will watch college and club crews come across it a few yards in front of you.
Late afternoon is the hour, with Key Bridge upriver on your right.

El césped que pisa iba a ser una autopista. En los años sesenta el Distrito expropió estas diez acres para una vía rápida junto al río. El proyecto se canceló, pero el terreno ya estaba arrasado, así que lo asfaltaron y lo explotaron como aparcamiento público. El Servicio de Parques recibió el suelo en 1984 y no tuvo presupuesto para construir nada, de modo que los coches siguieron ahí otros veinte años. El parque terminado abrió en otoño de 2011.
