The story
Grand Geyser is, in the park's words, the tallest predictable geyser in the world. It is a classic fountain geyser: instead of a steady column like Old Faithful, it erupts from a pool in powerful bursts. An average eruption lasts nine to twelve minutes and is made of one to four bursts, sometimes reaching 200 feet.
Grand is predicted, but with a wide window. The last table the park published, in November 2020, gave its interval as about six and a half hours, give or take an hour. The park's advice is simple: if you see a crowd at Grand and the pool looks full, wait a while.
In summer, yellow-bellied marmots are frequently seen in the rocks behind the geyser. Keep at least 25 yards from them and from every animal other than bears, wolves and cougars, for which the distance is 100 yards.
