The story
Across the Firehole River from Old Faithful, the boardwalk loops round Geyser Hill, which the park says holds more than 50 geysers, making it the fourth largest geyser field on Earth. Among them are Beehive, Heart Spring, Doublet Pool, Aurum, Giantess and the Lion Group, and the hill is a fine place to watch Old Faithful erupt across the river.
Beside the boardwalk are the Anemone geysers, two small geysers within ten feet of each other that usually act independently but sometimes seem connected. Smooth round sinter in their pools gives them their sea anemone look; the water averages 184.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
Read the colors as you walk. Colorless and yellow thermophiles, heat loving microbes, grow in the hottest water; orange, brown and green ones where it has cooled. Stay on the boardwalk, never run, and do not scratch the mats: the ground beside a pool can be a thin crust over boiling water.
