The art-deco icon of the skyline. The open-air 86th-floor deck is the classic New York view.
The story
It was built to win a race. John Jakob Raskob wanted the world's tallest building, and Walter Chrysler had just taken the record with a spire assembled in secret inside his own tower. Raskob's answer was height he could justify on paper: a mooring mast for airships. Updrafts around the top made mooring impractical, so the mast became a broadcast antenna instead.
The speed is the part that still stops people. Foundation work began on 17 March 1930 and the building was finished on 11 April 1931, about 410 days, with as many as 3,400 men on site in a single day and the steel frame rising roughly four and a half storeys a week. It opened into the Great Depression with most of its offices empty, and New Yorkers called it the Empty State Building. Observatory tickets helped carry it through those first years.
The 86th floor is the open-air one, and it is the one worth paying for. Sunset brings the best light and the longest line, so book a timed ticket.
