The Daily News Building (also the News Building) is a skyscraper at 220 East 42nd Street in the Midtown East neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, United States. The original tower, designed by Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells in the Art Deco style and completed in 1930, was one of several major developments constructed on 42nd Street around that time.
The story
Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells finished this tower in 1930 and left the top flat. Every other skyscraper of the decade wore some kind of crown. This one simply stops, which is why it still looks modern almost a century later. White brick piers run straight up and the black and reddish spandrels sit back between them, so from the sidewalk the building reads as vertical stripes rather than as floors.
The reason to go inside is the globe. Twelve feet across, hand painted, still turning, sunk six feet into a pit in the lobby floor, ringed by a bronze compass rose giving the distance from this address to cities around the world. In 1978 the Superman crew shot it as the Daily Planet lobby, for the obvious reason.
Above the 42nd Street door, Hood carved a line credited to Lincoln about ordinary people: He Made So Many of Them. The paper itself moved out in 1995.
