Washington's state museum of natural history and culture, begun by the Young Naturalists' Society in 1879, in a 2019 building that lets you watch its labs at work.
The story
The Burke began in December 1879 as the Young Naturalists' Society, young people in Seattle who collected specimens and objects to record a town changing around them. In 1885 they raised a small building on the university's first campus, downtown. The collection followed the university here, was made the Washington State Museum on March 6, 1899, and in 1962 took the name of Judge Thomas Burke, for a bequest in his honour.
The present building, by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig, opened in October 2019 and turns the museum inside out: twelve labs you can see into, six galleries and views into the stores of some 18 million objects. The museum says its long history of acquisition caused colonial harm to Indigenous communities, and it works with Tribal Nations to return ancestors and sacred objects. It stands, in its own words, on the lands of the Coast Salish peoples.
