The Benjamin N. Duke House, also the Duke–Semans Mansion and the Benjamin N. and Sarah Duke House, is a mansion at 1009 Fifth Avenue, at the southeast corner with 82nd Street, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. The story
Stand on the Met's front steps at 82nd Street and look across Fifth Avenue. The corner house of red brick and limestone went up between 1899 and 1901, built on speculation by two brothers named Hall who hoped a rich buyer would appear. One did. Benjamin N. Duke, chairman of the American Tobacco Company, bought it in June 1901, and his family held it for the next 105 years: Duke, then his daughter Mary Lillian Duke Biddle, then her daughter Mary Semans. In January 2006 the family sold it for $40 million to Tamir Sapir, who had come to New York with nothing and driven a taxi. It was the most anyone had paid for a Manhattan townhouse. The city landmarked the house in 1974. Look up at the copper mansard roof and the curved bay that turns the corner. Late afternoon is when the Fifth Avenue face is worth the photograph.
