A ribbed white transportation hall turns an active station into a dramatic public interior beside the World Trade Center memorial.

Guide's tip. Enter only through an open public station entrance and let the long white ribs pull your view toward the central skylight. This is an active PATH, subway and shopping hub, so do not block commuters or stairs. The calm geometry is most powerful when you compare it with the street outside. The story

The Oculus is the main hall of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, connecting PATH trains, subway lines, shops and pedestrian passages. Santiago Calatrava designed the ribbed structure as a civic room filled with white surfaces and daylight. Its form has been compared with wings, a bird and a hand opening toward the sky, but its daily purpose is practical: moving large numbers of people through Lower Manhattan.

Walk to the center and look along the building’s spine. Repeated ribs turn ordinary circulation into a measured rhythm, while the skylight changes with weather and time. Beauty here comes from the tension between grand symbolism and commuters moving quickly beneath it.

The Oculus is an active transit facility. Use open public entrances, keep stairs and paths clear, and follow current station, retail and security signs. Hours and access can change during maintenance or major events.
