The story
The names on the bronze parapets are not in alphabetical order, and visitors hunting for one often decide the arrangement is random. It is the opposite. The architect Michael Arad wanted each person placed where they were and who they were with that morning, so families were asked to request adjacencies and more than a thousand came back: colleagues, friends, people who had only just met.
Local Projects and the software artist Jer Thorp built an algorithm to fit those clusters, some of them seventy names long, into the 76 bronze panels around each pool. Reading the parapets is reading who stood beside whom. The six people killed in the 1993 bombing of the same buildings are named here too.
Most visitors walk straight past the Callery pear on the plaza. It came out of the rubble in October 2001 with its roots snapped and its branches burned, was nursed back by the city Parks Department and replanted here in 2010. Stand close and you can see the line where the blackened stumps end and the smooth new limbs begin.

Local Projects 和软件艺术家 Jer Thorp 为此写了一套算法，把这些少则数人、多至七十人的名字群，嵌进每座水池四周的 76 块铜板里。所以你读的不是一份名单，是那天谁挨着谁。1993 年同一栋楼爆炸案中遇难的六个人，名字也刻在这里。
广场上那棵豆梨，多数人径直走过。2001 年 10 月它从废墟里被挖出来，根断了，枝烧焦了，由市公园管理局养护多年，2010 年重新栽回这里。走近看：焦黑的老桩到光滑的新枝，那道分界线清清楚楚。

Los nombres de los pretiles de bronce no están en orden alfabético, y quien busca uno sin consultar el directorio suele concluir que el orden es aleatorio. Es justo lo contrario. El arquitecto Michael Arad quiso que cada persona figurara donde estaba y con quién estaba esa mañana, así que se invitó a las familias a pedir adyacencias y llegaron más de mil: compañeros de trabajo, amigos, personas que acababan de conocerse.
Local Projects y el artista de software Jer Thorp crearon un algoritmo para encajar esos grupos, algunos de setenta nombres, en los 76 paneles de bronce que rodean cada estanque. Leer los pretiles es leer quién estuvo al lado de quién. También están aquí los seis fallecidos en el atentado de 1993 contra los mismos edificios.
Casi nadie se fija en el peral de Callery de la explanada. Những cái tên trên thành lan can bằng đồng không xếp theo thứ tự chữ cái. Người đi tìm một cái tên mà không tra máy hướng dẫn thường nghĩ thứ tự là ngẫu nhiên. Thực ra hoàn toàn ngược lại. Kiến trúc sư Michael Arad muốn mỗi người được đặt đúng nơi họ có mặt và bên cạnh người họ ở cùng sáng hôm đó, nên các gia đình được mời gửi yêu cầu xếp cạnh nhau, và hơn một nghìn yêu cầu đã gửi về: đồng nghiệp, bạn bè, cả những người vừa mới gặp nhau.
