The story
West 24th Street between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues sits in the heart of the West Chelsea gallery district, where published accounts count more than two hundred galleries. Dealers began moving here from SoHo in the late 1990s, as rents climbed and upscale shops competed for the large, airy spaces that galleries need. They settled into the old industrial buildings of a neighborhood the elevated freight line was built to serve.
Gagosian has two spaces on this block, at 555 and 541 West 24th Street, and both list their hours as Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Galleries are working showrooms, where the art is for sale, so the rooms are quiet and the shows change every few weeks. Gagosian does not allow large bags, backpacks, umbrellas, food or drink inside.
The warehouse blocks around you became the West Chelsea Historic District in 2008. If you arrive on a Sunday or a Monday, treat this as a street stop. Look at the converted industrial facades, then look up at the High Line where it crosses the street.

La calle 24 Oeste, entre la Décima y la Undécima avenidas, está en el corazón del distrito de galerías de West Chelsea, donde las fuentes publicadas cuentan más de doscientas galerías.
