The story

The trains that ran up here went straight into the buildings. The viaduct opened in 1934 to lift freight off Tenth Avenue, which New Yorkers called Death Avenue because street-level trains kept killing people, and the railroad had hired men on horseback to ride ahead waving red flags. The last of those West Side Cowboys rode in 1941. Up here the tracks ran through factory walls: the National Biscuit Company plant, now Chelsea Market, took its deliveries indoors.

The last train came through in 1980, three cars of frozen turkeys. Then it sat abandoned for nearly thirty years, seeding itself with grasses and wildflowers. In October 1999 two neighborhood residents, Joshua David and Robert Hammond, founded Friends of the High Line and stopped the demolition. Piet Oudolf's planting today is a deliberate echo of what grew here on its own.

Stop at the sunken seating at 17th Street. The steps face a window that frames Tenth Avenue traffic running underneath you. It is 1.45 miles end to end. Come early; the middle of the day is shoulder to shoulder.

Friends of the High Line,把拆除令挡了下来。

Friends of the High Line을 만들어 철거를 막았습니다.
