The story
The tower stands here because of a trade. In 1979 the developer agreed to give the city 15,000 square feet of public space, the atrium and the gardens, and in return won the right to build roughly 200,000 square feet more, about twenty extra floors. That is why you walk in without paying, and why the pink marble hall is legally yours. In 2017 the city fined the building $14,000 for removing a public bench and putting sales counters where it had been.
Before this, the site held Bonwit Teller, an Art Deco department store from 1929. Two limestone relief panels over its entrance were promised to the Metropolitan Museum. In June 1980 the demolition crew broke them up with jackhammers instead, and the New York Times ran it on the front page.
Der Scutt cut the glass into 28 sides so more apartments got a corner. Cross to the east side of Fifth Avenue at 57th Street to see the whole sawtooth at once.
