The 1925 neo-Gothic tower that won the Chicago Tribune's 1922 design competition, its base set with more than 120 stones from famous places.
The story
In 1922 the Chicago Tribune's publishers, Robert McCormick and Joseph Patterson, held an international competition for a new home, and the City's landmark report quotes the goal: the most beautiful office building in the world. More than 260 entries came from 23 countries. John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood of New York won, and their tower, finished in 1925, ends in a crown of flying buttresses that the City traces to the cathedral at Rouen.
Walk up to the base. Set into the walls, each with a label, are fragments from famous places, more than 120 of them by the City's count: the Parthenon, the Taj Mahal, Bunker Hill, and a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.
The newspaper has gone. Since 2021 the tower has been private homes, so everything here is seen from the sidewalk.
