The story

Daniel Burnham drew this bridge into his 1909 Plan of Chicago as the gateway between the city's north and south sides. Edward Bennett designed it and its four bridge towers; it opened in 1920, and the museum inside calls it the first double-deck, double-leaf, fixed trunnion bascule bridge ever built. Each leaf weighs about 4,100 tons against a 12,000 ton counterweight, balanced so finely that a 108-horsepower motor lifts it.

The carved panels on the towers were added in 1928. The south end touches the site of Fort Dearborn, and the north end meets the homestead of Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, for whom the bridge was renamed in 2010. The landmark papers describe him as born in Haiti to a French sailor father and a mother of African descent, so the first person to settle here for good who was not Native was a Black man.

The McCormick Bridgehouse and Chicago River Museum climbs five stories inside the southwest tower, from the gears at river level to the view at the top.
