Nathan Phillips Square combines the illuminated Toronto Sign with the Spirit Garden, a place of Indigenous teaching, remembrance and gathering.

The story

The Toronto Sign arrived at Nathan Phillips Square for the 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games. A more durable version replaced it in 2020. The letters are three metres tall, illuminated and able to change color for civic events and commemorations.

Beside that popular photograph is the Spirit Garden, opened in 2024 after years of work with Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre and the City. The garden honors residential school survivors and children lost to families and communities. Its turtle, spirit canoe, Inuksuk, teaching lodge, Two-Row Wampum walkway and Three Sisters garden represent distinct Indigenous traditions and teachings.

Take the sign photograph, then slow down. Read the garden as a place for learning, remembrance and ceremony rather than decoration. Give gatherings space. The contrast matters: one installation celebrates the city's public image, while the other asks the city to remember responsibilities beneath that image.
