The story
The Art Gallery of Ontario holds more than 120,000 works spanning European, Canadian, Indigenous, African, contemporary and other collections. Its building grew through many additions, including a major transformation by Toronto-born architect Frank Gehry completed in 2008.
Gehry's Galleria Italia runs along Dundas Street as a long curve of glass and Douglas fir. Daylight, wood ribs and views of the street make circulation feel like part of the collection. The gallery becomes a lens between artworks and the city rather than a sealed container.
Choose one work and look for five quiet minutes before reading the label. Then use Universal Gallery to follow the artist, title or object number. The AGO closes Monday and uses changing hours on other days. Admission rules and exhibitions also change, so confirm the official visit page before planning a long museum stop.
