The Tontine Coffee House was a coffeehouse in Manhattan, New York City, established in early 1793. Situated at 88 Wall Street, on the northwest corner with Water Street, it was built by a group of stockbrokers to serve as a meeting place for trade and correspondence.
The story
There is nothing here. Say that first, because people arrive at this corner looking for a building and walk away thinking they missed it. Stand at the northwest corner of Wall and Water Street and you are standing where American stock trading moved indoors.
In May 1792, brokers signed an agreement under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street, promising to trade only with each other. That is the founding story everyone knows. What nobody tells you is that the agreement was a promise with no roof over it. A year later a group of stockbrokers built the roof: the Tontine Coffee House, open for business at 88 Wall Street in early 1793.
They paid for it with a tontine, which is where the name comes from. Two hundred and three shares at two hundred pounds each. As subscribers died their shares passed to the survivors, so the last one living owned the building outright. That was ordinary finance in 1793.
Inside, brokers dealt in stock and merchants registered ship cargoes. People were bought and sold here too, and a guide who leaves that out is selling you a shorter street than the one you are on. The house also ran auctions, banquets and balls, and in the years after the Revolution the fights outside between British and French sympathizers were frequent enough to be written down.
Trading moved out in 1817 to the New York Stock and Exchange Board, which became the New York Stock Exchange. The building turned tavern in 1826, hotel in 1832, survived the Great Fire of 1835, and came down in 1855. Its replacement stood until 1901.
The building that replaced that one is still here, now the Wall Street Hotel. Look along its side for the Buttonwood Agreement marker. Two minutes, one corner, and the reason this street means what it means.

Năm 1817, việc giao dịch dời sang New York Stock and Exchange Board, tổ chức về sau trở thành Sở Giao dịch Chứng khoán New York.
