The Tidal Basin is a man-made reservoir located between the Potomac River and the Washington Channel in Washington, D.C. The Basin is part of West Potomac Park, is near the National Mall and is a focal point of the National Cherry Blossom Festival held each spring. The nearby Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr.
The story
The Tidal Basin is not a pond. The Army Corps of Engineers dug it between 1882 and 1897 as a machine. Twice a day the incoming tide pushes about 250 million gallons through the inlet gates, and when the tide turns those gates swing shut, the outlet gates on the Washington Channel side open, and the outrush scours silt from the channel so boats can still use it. You are paddling on working harbor equipment.
The cherry trees came later. Tokyo's mayor Yukio Ozaki sent 3,020 in 1912, after a first shipment of 2,000 arrived infested in 1910 and was burned on President Taft's order. Helen Taft and Viscountess Chinda planted the first two on the north bank on March 27, 1912.
Rent at the dock on Maine Avenue SW. Boats go first come. The reason to pay is the angle: from the middle of the water the Jefferson Memorial stands clear across open water, with nobody's head in your photograph.
