The domed rotunda on the Tidal Basin, ringed by cherry trees that explode into bloom around late March.
The story
The cherry trees came first, and people fought for them. On 18 November 1938 about 150 women arrived at the construction site, wrestled the shovels away from the Civilian Conservation Corps crews digging the trees out, and chained themselves to the trunks. They chained a U.S. Park Police sergeant to a tree as well. Work stopped for a day. Roosevelt refused to move the memorial, digging resumed the next month, and the building was dedicated on 13 April 1943.
What Roosevelt dedicated was not finished. Bronze was restricted for the war, so the nineteen-foot Jefferson standing in the rotunda that day was plaster, painted to pass for metal. The real bronze was not cast and installed until 1947.
Before you go inside, stand on the north steps. The memorial faces the Tidal Basin and the White House, and that view across the water is what the argument was about.
