The New York Earth Room is an interior sculpture by the artist Walter De Maria that has been installed in a loft at 141 Wooster Street in New York City since 1977. The sculpture is a permanent installation of 250 cubic yards (197 cubic meters) of earth in 3,600 (335 square meters) square feet of floor space, and 22 inch depth of material (56 centimeters).
The story
Ring the buzzer marked 2B and take the elevator to the second floor. The door opens on a loft full of dirt. Two hundred and fifty cubic yards of it, twenty-two inches deep across 3,600 square feet, weighing 280,000 pounds. Walter De Maria put it here in 1977 and it has not moved since.
You do not walk on it. You stand at a glass panel at the edge of a field, two floors above Wooster Street. What reaches you first is the smell, damp and cold, a garden after rain in the middle of SoHo.
De Maria built three Earth Rooms. The first was in Munich in 1968. This is the only one left, kept by the Dia Art Foundation, free to walk into, and looked after by the same caretaker from 1989 until 2024.
