The story
This one is gone. Starbucks closed the Reserve Roastery on 25 September 2025, together with its SoDo Reserve store, and it has not reopened. Do not build a morning around it.
The building still earns a look if you are walking Pike Street. It went up in the 1920s as a motor car showroom on what Seattle then called Auto Row, and when Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig turned it into the first Reserve Roastery in December 2014 he kept the terra cotta front and the tall display windows. Inside were fifteen thousand square feet, copper pipes carrying beans overhead, and roasters working behind glass.
For Starbucks history, go to 1912 Pike Place instead. One thing worth knowing while you stand in that queue: it is not the original either. The first store opened on 30 March 1971 at 2000 Western Avenue and moved to Pike Place about five years later.
