The South Street Seaport is a historic area and neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan, centered where Fulton Street meets the East River, within the Financial District of Lower Manhattan. The Seaport is a designated historic district.
The story
Stand on Fulton Street with the river behind you and look at the low brick block. Peter Schermerhorn built a dozen counting houses here between 1811 and 1812, and he built them on made land. The water once reached Front Street, and the ground under your feet was filled in by hand in the late 1700s. The mansard roofs came after the Civil War, so the row is a century of building stacked on one wall.
The Fulton Fish Market worked this corner from 1822 until 2005, when it moved to Hunts Point in the Bronx. Most visitors walk straight past the white lighthouse at Fulton and Pearl. That is the Titanic Memorial, raised in 1913 on the roof of the Seamen's Church Institute and brought down here in the 1970s. At the pier, the iron ship Wavertree was launched at Southampton in 1885.
Come before ten. The blocks are quiet, and the morning sun comes up Fulton straight off the river.

Ponte en Fulton Street de espaldas al río y mira la manzana baja de ladrillo. Peter Schermerhorn levantó aquí una docena de casas de comercio entre 1811 y 1812, y las levantó sobre terreno ganado al agua.
