The silver geodesic dome built for Expo 86 now holds hands-on science galleries beside False Creek, turning a former fair landmark into a place for experiments.

Guide's tip. Circle the dome before entering and watch its triangular skin change against the water. Inside, choose a few experiments and stay with them long enough to test an idea. Science World currently closes at 5 p.m. and recommends about two hours. Granville Island is an orange 2.13-mile waterfront choice; take transit, taxi or another day if the walk would reduce the visit.

The story

Science World occupies the geodesic dome built as the Expo Centre for Expo 86. After the fair, the landmark became a permanent science center beside False Creek, with hands-on galleries, demonstrations, films and programs designed around active investigation.

The building itself is an experiment in perception. Repeating triangles create a sphere-like volume, and changing light makes the metallic surface move between mirror, shadow and silhouette. The former fair site around it also shows how Vancouver reshaped industrial waterfront land.

Walk around the dome before entering, then choose a few exhibits instead of trying every button. Ask what changed when you acted and whether the result matched your prediction. The official visit page currently lists daily hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and recommends about two hours.
