The story
At Place Royale, the museum stands above the point where the St. Pierre River once met the St. Lawrence and where Ville-Marie was founded in 1642. The archaeological record reaches farther back, carrying evidence of Indigenous presence before the French settlement and of the many city layers that followed.
The most unusual part of the visit is below street level. Foundations, sewers, walls and changing ground surfaces remain in place, so history appears as construction rather than a row of dates. The museum complex links several buildings and uses the underground route to connect them.
Begin by choosing one trace to follow. Notice where one wall cuts another and where the modern city must bend around older remains. The museum usually closes Monday outside its summer schedule, and the official page lists seasonal and holiday changes.
