The story
Bonsecours Market opened in 1847 with a long stone body and a bright metal dome that became one of Old Montréal's defining silhouettes. The building served not only as a market but also as a concert hall and, for a time, as a home for municipal government.
That mixed history explains its scale. It was designed for trade, ceremony and public recognition at once. Today Québec craft, design and specialty shops occupy the interior, while seasonal terraces and events keep changing what happens around the edges.
Walk around the building before entering. From the river side, the dome helps orient the whole waterfront. Inside, choose one locally made object and ask how it was produced. Shop hours differ by day and can change for events, so consult the official schedule rather than assuming the public exterior and businesses close together.
