The story
Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica faces the National Gallery with twin silver spires and a richly colored interior. The active Roman Catholic cathedral combines worship, carved wood, stained glass, painted surfaces and a blue ceiling filled with stars. Its art should be encountered within a living religious space rather than treated as a detached collection.\n\nSit quietly before trying to photograph details. Services, funerals, weddings and private prayer always take priority, and the cathedral closes to tourists during Mass. Personal photography is allowed only when it does not obstruct others.\n\nThe Sussex Street front entrances are temporarily closed for renovation as of 2026. Visitors must use the current side entrance on St. Patrick Street or Guigues Avenue. Published visiting hours vary by day and can change at short notice, so confirm them before arrival.
