The story

The National Museum of the American Indian’s New York home occupies the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, completed in 1907 when customs revenue and maritime trade were central to federal finance. The Smithsonian museum presents Indigenous art, history and living cultures from across the Western Hemisphere. Outside, the sculpted facade and figures celebrate ocean commerce; inside, the rotunda and exhibitions invite a more complex conversation about land, exchange and power.

Begin by looking up in the rotunda, then choose one gallery instead of rushing through every case. Pay attention to artist names, nations and dates. The building itself is beautiful, but the collections ask you to see Indigenous makers as contemporary voices rather than anonymous artifacts.

Admission is free and no ticket is required. Current hours are daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except December 25. Use the south entrance at Bowling Green and follow screening and photography rules.
