The Wall, also known as The Gateway to Soho, is a piece of minimalist art that was constructed in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It was part of the building that stands at 599 Broadway until 2002 when the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) gave the owners permission to take it down so the interior wall could be repaired.
The story
Forrest Myers put this up in 1973: 42 green aluminum bars on 42 steel braces, set against a blue field covering most of the blank south wall of 599 Broadway. That wall is blank because Houston Street was widened and the row of buildings that once stood against it came down.
Then it became a lawsuit. The owners wanted billboards on one of the busiest corners in SoHo and valued the space at about 600,000 dollars a year. They took the work down in 2002 for repairs. A federal judge found in 2005 that the piece was not technically part of the building. In 2007 the city and the owners settled: the wall was raised 30 feet, the artwork went back 18 feet higher, and the advertising got the space nearer the street.
