The story
The New Orleans Jazz Museum occupies the Old U.S. Mint at the meeting point of the French Quarter and the Frenchmen Street music corridor. Instruments, photographs, recordings, archives and performances examine jazz as both history and a living practice shaped by generations of musicians.
Choose one object, such as an instrument with a known performer, and listen for the human work behind it. A famous name can open the story, but ensembles, neighborhoods, venues and audiences also made the music possible. Universal Gallery can extend a documented maker, player or catalogue record while keeping uncertain identifications explicit.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Barracks Street entrance is recommended for accessible access, and elevators serve all levels. Check special closures and performance schedules before arrival.
