The National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) is a natural history museum administered by the Smithsonian Institution, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., United States. It has free admission and is open 364 days a year.
The story
The museum opened on March 17, 1910, before its own building was finished. Construction ran on until June 1911. Hornblower and Marshall drew it, ground broke in 1904, and the national collections were carted up from the Castle by horse. For its first sixty years this was the whole United States National Museum. It narrowed to natural history alone in 1969. Entry is free.
The elephant in the rotunda is the first thing you see, and he is not a model. He was an African bull, shot in Angola in 1955 by Josef Fenykovi, a Hungarian engineer living in Madrid who had found the tracks a year earlier and come back equipped to follow them. The hide went to William L. Brown, the Smithsonian's chief taxidermist, who spent months watching the elephants at the National Zoo so he could pose this one at a fast walk, trunk up, ears fanned. It was unveiled in March 1959, stands about thirteen feet at the shoulder, and is still the largest land mammal mounted in any museum.
Upstairs, the Hope Diamond arrived in a cardboard box. Harry Winston gave it to the nation in November 1958 and sent it from his New York shop by registered mail: two dollars and forty-four cents in postage, a hundred and forty-two eighty-five in insurance. A Washington letter carrier named James Todd walked it into the building and handed it over. The brown paper wrapper is in the Smithsonian's collection as well.
What is on the walls is a fraction. Ten million objects came across from the Castle in 1909. The count is past 145 million now, and nearly all of it sits in drawers and jars behind the halls, worked on by scientists rather than looked at by visitors.
Come at ten when the doors open and go to the gem hall first. By noon the line for the diamond folds back on itself, and it is a small dark room where nobody can hurry.
