The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is the most recent addition to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in the United States. It is located in the National Mall between the National Gallery's West Building and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History.
The story
The fountain in the middle of this garden is the point. From late November to early March the water is drained and frozen, and you skate a circle inside a sculpture collection: Louise Bourgeois's spider, Roy Lichtenstein's House I, Claes Oldenburg's giant typewriter eraser. The rest of the year the same basin runs as a fountain and people sit on the rim with their shoes off.
The garden is free to walk through, like the rest of the National Gallery. Skating is not. Two back-to-back sessions ran $15 in the 2025-26 season, $12 if you are over 60, under 13, a student or serving, and skates rent for $7. Sessions start on the hour and last 45 minutes, then the ice is resurfaced for 15, so arrive ten minutes before the hour or you will watch the first one from the rail.
The Pavilion Cafe is inside the garden. Check the season dates before you come, because a warm week closes the ice.

Lo importante de este jardín es la fuente del centro. Desde finales de noviembre hasta principios de marzo se vacía y se congela, y uno patina dentro de una colección de esculturas: la araña de Louise Bourgeois, la Casa I de Roy Lichtenstein, la goma de borrar gigante de Claes Oldenburg. El resto del año la misma pila funciona como fuente y la gente se sienta en el borde con los zapatos quitados.
