The only Leonardo da Vinci painting in the Americas, plus Vermeer, Monet and a sculpture garden.
The story
Andrew Mellon gave this museum to the nation on one condition: it would not carry his name. He wanted other collectors to feel they could give too, and they did. Construction began in June 1937. Mellon died that August, and his architect, John Russell Pope, died less than a day later. Neither man saw the building open in March 1941. Pope's partners finished it.
Entry is free, as Mellon intended. The one thing to find is small. Leonardo da Vinci painted his portrait of Ginevra de' Benci, a young Florentine woman, around 1474. The Gallery bought it in February 1967 from the Prince of Liechtenstein for about five million dollars, the highest price paid for any painting at the time. It is the only Leonardo on public view anywhere in the Americas.
It hangs in the West Building, and it has been moved during renovation work, so ask at the desk before you start walking.

Andrew Mellon regaló este museo a la nación con una sola condición: que no llevara su nombre. Quería que otros coleccionistas sintieran que también podían donar, y donaron. Las obras empezaron en junio de 1937. Mellon murió aquel agosto y su arquitecto, John Russell Pope, murió menos de un día después. Ninguno de los dos vio la inauguración de marzo de 1941.
