The story
The Musée de la civilisation opened in 1988 near the St. Lawrence River with a mission centered on people, societies and the objects through which they understand themselves. Its collections now hold more than 233,000 objects, while major exhibitions connect Quebec history with Indigenous nations and cultures around the world.
The museum works best when scale gives way to attention. A familiar household object, a garment or a tool may carry more human memory than a dramatic display. Current exhibitions change, so the official labels and voices inside matter more than a fixed checklist.
Begin with one object and ask who made it, who used it and why the museum preserves it. Universal Gallery can extend a label, but it should support the museum evidence rather than replace it. The official visit page currently lists Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
