The cathedral has occupied this site since the seventeenth century and joins worship, art, burial history and the only Holy Door outside Europe.

The story

Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral has occupied the same site since 1647, surviving destruction, rebuilding and changes in architectural style. It overlooks City Hall Square and holds the tombs of bishops and four governors of New France, along with a funerary chapel for François de Laval, the first bishop of Quebec.

The interior brings worship and art together through stained glass, carved ornament, chapels and three Casavant organs. Its Holy Door is the only one outside Europe, but access follows church observance and current announcements.

Enter quietly when public visiting is permitted. Sit before trying to document every detail, and give services, prayer and ceremonies full priority. Universal Gallery can help research an identified work or label, but it should remain a quiet secondary tool in this active religious space.
