The Korean War Veterans Memorial is located in Washington, D.C.'s West Potomac Park, southeast of the Lincoln Memorial and just south of the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. The story
Nineteen stainless steel soldiers cross a field of juniper here, and if you stand at the low end of the triangle they are walking straight at you. Frank Gaylord sculpted them at seven feet three inches, taller than the men they stand for, in ponchos caught by wind. Fourteen are Army, three Marines, one Navy, one Air Force, a patrol assembled from every branch that fought.
Now look at the black granite wall running beside them. Louis Nelson had forty one panels, one hundred sixty four feet of stone, and fifteen thousand photographs in the National Archives to choose from. He sandblasted about two thousand four hundred faces into it: pilots, nurses, mechanics, radio operators, chaplains, the people who kept a patrol alive without carrying its rifle. The stone is polished, so the soldiers reflect in it. Nineteen figures and nineteen reflections make thirty eight, for the parallel the war was fought across and the thirty eight months it lasted.
At the point of the triangle the ground drops to the Pool of Remembrance, and the wall beside it reads FREEDOM IS NOT FREE. Read that one slowly. This was the war the country stopped discussing almost as soon as the shooting stopped, and the memorial did not open until 27 July 1995, forty two years to the day after the armistice was signed.
The newest part is the Wall of Remembrance, dedicated on that same date in 2022. It carries 43,808 names: the American dead, and the Korean soldiers who served inside American units, the KATUSA. Until then nothing here told you who they were.
Come after dark. The statues are lit from below, the ponchos throw long shadows across the juniper, and the field finally reads the way the sculptor built it to read. Rain or snow is better still.
