A free museum and research collection uses historic Royal Street buildings to tell the layered history of New Orleans and the Gulf South.

Guide's tip. Begin in the courtyard and choose one object, document or artwork before reading its label. Admission is free, but a ticket is required, and the museum closes at 4:30 p.m. Walk 0.19 miles to the Cabildo beside Jackson Square.

The story

The Historic New Orleans Collection brings a museum, research center and historic architecture together on Royal Street. Its exhibitions use documents, objects, artworks and oral histories to examine New Orleans and the Gulf South, including stories that a decorative French Quarter facade can hide. Admission is free, but the museum requires a ticket.

Begin with the courtyard and the building itself, then select one object and read its label closely. Ask who made it, who preserved it and whose voice is still missing. Universal Gallery can extend a named artist or catalogue record without claiming more than the evidence supports.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and closes at 4:30 p.m., with different Sunday opening time and holiday closures. Confirm the current exhibition and ticket before arrival.
