Food stalls, small producers and working arts spaces fill a former industrial island beneath the Granville Street Bridge.

Guide's tip. Treat the market as a working food hall rather than a checklist. Choose one local ingredient or maker, then step outside to see boats, bridge structure and workshop buildings around it. Regular market hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with some seasonal later days. Vancouver Art Gallery is an orange 1.89-mile choice; compare bus, ferry, taxi or another day.

The story

Granville Island grew from an industrial site in False Creek into a mixed district of food, craft, performance, education and working production. The Public Market is its busiest room, where produce, seafood, prepared food and small local businesses share narrow aisles.

The island works because it did not become only a polished shopping center. Bridge columns, loading areas, workshops, theaters and docks keep practical work visible beside visitor activity.

Choose one ingredient or maker and ask where it comes from, then carry the experience outside to the waterfront. Respect residents, workers and delivery paths, and do not feed birds around outdoor food. The Public Market’s regular hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; official seasonal notices sometimes extend selected days to 7 p.m.
