The Film Forum is a nonprofit movie theater at 209 West Houston Street in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City. It is a four-screen movie theater open 365 days a year, with up to 250,000 annual admissions, nearly 500 seats, 60 employees, over 6,500 members, and an operating budget of $7 million.
The story
Film Forum opened in 1970 with fifty folding chairs, one 16mm projector and a budget of nineteen thousand dollars, in a room on West 88th Street that ran three nights a week. It moved twice, to Vandam Street in 1975 and a former garage on Watts Street in 1980, before settling at 209 West Houston in 1990. Karen Cooper ran it from 1972 to 2023, fifty one years, and built it into the only autonomous nonprofit cinema in New York City.
It runs two programs at once: first run independent and foreign films, and a repertory slate of revivals, retrospectives and new restorations, four hundred to five hundred titles a year across four screens. The fourth screen came out of a five million dollar rebuild in 2018 that also put stadium seating and real legroom into the three older houses, so there is no bad row left.
