The story
Nobody commissioned this bull. After the stock market crash of 1987, the Sicilian born sculptor Arturo Di Modica spent more than $300,000 of his own money and about two years making it, and had it cast at a foundry in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The city's parks department quotes him describing it as the strength and determination of the American people.
One night in December 1989, just before Christmas, he and a crew of friends set it down in front of the New York Stock Exchange without a permit. It was hauled away the next day to a police warehouse in Queens, and he paid a $500 fine. But crowds had already seen it, and within days the city let it stand here, at the north end of Bowling Green.
What was meant to be temporary has lasted more than thirty five years, and the ownership is still murky. In 2026 the Parks Department told a reporter that it does not own the bull and is not responsible for its upkeep. Di Modica died in Sicily in February 2021, at 80. Come early for a quieter look, and ignore anyone here offering ferry tickets.
